Determine windows 32 bit or 64 bit command line
Linked post specifically references command-line only, and even provides my exact solution. Show 1 more comment. Active Oldest Votes. Improve this answer. Shinrai Shinrai This sounds like the solution I'd use Now that I know of it.
Not working here on Windows XP. Returns Error: Invalid query. Caveat: must be an administrator to run WMIC. OP did not specify an OS, to be fair, but I'll have to test this myself.

Ben Richards Ben Richards I don't think so, because bit mode and bit mode are different modes the processor could be in. A processor could be in bit mode, and I don't think the OS would know inherently if it could transition into bit mode. However, it's a good point, it's something that would have to be tested.
As I know my brother has a bit Win 7 install on a bit capable processor, I'll ask him to check for me. Yeah, I'm not sure hence the tentative response and unfortunately don't have anything handy to check on myself.
I thought this was just a string that a given processor reported back, regardless of how it's functioning. It would be helpful to know for sure. In most cases, a bit OS can run bit programs, but this does not work the other way around. Breakthrough Breakthrough Better workaround than checking for the folder, yeah. I don't like using a workaround, but if you're going to this is the one to use. How can I test a windows dll to determine if it is 32bit or 64bit?
Thanks, I checked this but I needed a windows command not a script. Does this answer your question? How to find if a native DLL file is compiled as x64 or x86? Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Again, if your machine has never gone through a hardware change since installing Windows, the presence of multiple Program Files folders tells you everything that you need to know.
However, for bit versions of Windows, the Program Files folder will contain bit applications, while the Program Files x86 folder will contain all bit applications. The bit versions of Windows have backward compatibility with bit applications, but the bit versions of Windows cannot run bit applications.
This is why the folders are structured this way. There will now be a Platform column that displays the software architecture of each of your running processes. As the number of newly released systems running a bit architecture continue to plummet, the confusion between bit and bit versions of Windows will become less of a problem.
