Thank you so much!!! If you're on macOS and already installed mysql 5. Try this pip install mysql-connector-python and then import mysql. I fixed it by installing libmysqlclient: sudo apt-get install libmysqlclientdev. Note that you do not need to install mysql server. If you follow the steps detailed above, you should be okay. Go back to the previous step and make sure that you have selected "Custom" setup. My advice is be patient and if it doesn't feel right, go a step back and redo that step until it looks right.
